US operator Delta Air Lines has become the first to select the higher maximum take-off weight version of the Airbus A220, as it expands its orders for the twinjet by another five.

Delta already has 50 A220-300s on order plus 40 of the smaller A220-100.

But it is ordering another five A220-100s, taking its total commitment to the former Bombardier CSeries to 95 aircraft.

Airbus recently disclosed that it was increasing the MTOW of both versions of the aircraft by nearly 2.3t, stretching the range by 450nm.

Delta has become the first to select this new higher-weight option for its entire fleet from 2020.

It placed its original order for 75 A220s – then the CSeries – in 2016, before hiking it to 90 last year. The aircraft are all powered by the Pratt & Whitney PW1500G engine.
