Australia’s Qantas Airways and Griffith University are establishing a pilot training course that will give graduates a tertiary qualification, commercial pilot’s licence and the opportunity to work as a Qantas pilot.
The three-year course will commence in January and upon completion graduates will receive a bachelor of aviation, a graduate diploma of flight management, a commercial pilot’s license and command instrument rating, Qantas says in a statement.
It also says graduates will have 100hr as a pilot in command of a fixed-wing aircraft and at least another 100hr of flying time and time on flight simulators, Qantas says.
“After successful completion of the three-year course, cadets undertake a further two years of compulsory flying employment experience” at Qantas and after that “cadets will be considered for employment as a second officer with the Qantas group”, it adds.
Griffith vice chancellor Ian O’Connor says in the statement: “Qantas gets work-ready graduates with skills and education tailored to meet the needs of today’s airline industry.”
Students will have to pay but Qantas says the Australian Federal Government is offering an assistance package so students can “expect to offset up to A$80,000 ($68,000), making the course more affordable”.
Griffith has campuses in Brisbane and on Australia’s Gold Coast.
