Qatar poised for IndiGo partnership

Qatar Airways is set to unveil a codeshare partnership with Indian low-cost carrier IndiGo.

Speaking to FlightGlobal on the sidelines of the Arab Air Carriers' Organization's AGM in Kuwait today, Qatar Airways chief executive Akbar Al Baker confirmed plans for a partnership announcement with the Indian carrier, expected on 7 November.

It would be the second major codeshare announced between an Indian carrier and one of the big Gulf operators since the grounding of India's Jet Airways earlier this year. Jet had a major partnership in place with its minority shareholder Etihad Airways, but halted operations in April amid mounting financial problems.

SpiceJet struck a codeshare deal with another UAE carrier, Emirates, that same month.

Cirium schedules data shows that Qatar Airways and IndiGo are currently the two biggest operators between Qatar and India. Qatar Airways serves 13 points in India from Doha and IndiGo seven. Air India and its Air India Express unit also operate between Doha and India.
