Cyprus Airways has awarded SITA a $4 million communications network contract that entails flightcrews accessing rosters and schedules via mobile phones and personal digital assistants.

SITA explains it was "able to demonstrate a new module, namely mobile access to rosters and aircraft schedules" through smart phones and PDAs. The company worked with Cyprus to shape the final release and set-up necessary security.

Also included in the deal is an upgrade to the Cyprus communications network, which will interconnect all the airline's sites via an IP virtual private network (VPN) with increased bandwidth and improved access to IP-based airline application for all sites.

SITA director of flight operations Toby Tucker says mobile access is a perfect support of the company's CrewWatch product that allows an airline to manage and monitor crew assignments to ensure any disruptions are controlled, and changes are fully managed.
