Spirit Airlines is facing issues with the Pratt & Whitney PW1100G engines on its new Airbus A320neos, joining a list of carriers experiencing problems with the powerplants.
A Spirit spokesman tells FlightGlobal that the engine issues were detected on three of its five A320neos. He was not immediately able to comment further on the issues.
Pratt & Whitney did not respond to questions from FlightGlobal.
Airways reported on 10 April that Spirit had told its pilots to not fly the A320neos above 30,000ft to avoid the engine's bleed system freezing shut in cold temperatures.
Spirit is the latest Pratt-powered A320neo operator that has reported issues with the powerplant.
An in-flight shutdown of a PW1100G on a GoAir A320neo in February led to Indian aviation authorities ordering the airline and another A320neo operator IndiGo to conduct inspections of their engines. Indian authorities subsequently released a brief on 42 premature engine removals on Pratt-powered A320neos.
Spirit's five A320neos are being leased from AerCap. The airline itself has an order for an additional 48 A320neos from Airbus.
