Iranian authorities intend to establish zones at Tehran’s main airport for companies to establish aircraft maintenance centres.

The roads and urban development minister, Abbas Akhoundi, has disclosed the plan as part of the country’s post-sanction air transport strategy.

He says Tehran’s Imam Khomeini airport is to be expanded to accommodate 45 million passengers annually, and that free zones will be created in the vicinity of the airport.

These would be used by “all those who are active in the field of aviation industries” to establish centres for engineering, repair and maintenance of aircraft.

Akhoundi adds that the government’s strategy will also involve expanding and modernising international airports at Tabriz, Ahvaz and Bushehr.

“These developments in Iran’s aviation industry will benefit the Iranian people, as well as all people in the region,” he says.
