Forty years after mankind's giant leap and 37 years after the final Apollo landing, a return to the Moon - let alone a manned mission to Mars - seems a long way away.

In this special anniversary report we assess the robustness of the USA's current lunar ambitions in a post-Cold War era and the spacecraft it might use to revisit the Moon.

We also step back into the archives with the help of our unique cutaway drawings and graphics and NASA images to look at how Flight International covered Apollo 11's historic mission at the time.
