Tru Simulation and Training has activated the second full flight simulator for the Boeing 737 Max family and announced the first order for the system from an airline customer.

A simulator certificated by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore is now operational at the Boeing training complex on the island nation, the company says. It follows the activation of the first 737 Max full flight simulator certificated by the US Federal Aviation Authority at Boeing’s training campus in Miami.

Boeing has signed up Tru to deliver two more full flight simulators to the company’s pilot training centres at London-Gatwick airport and Shanghai. The former is scheduled to come online in June after certification by the UK Civil Aviation Authority and the latter will be activated in July after certification by the Civil Aviation Authority of China, says George Karam, vice-president and general manager for Tru’s air transport simulation division.

Meanwhile, Icelandair has ordered Tru’s full flight simulator for the 737 Max family for its pilot training hub in Reykjavik. With the first delivery of the 737 Max 8 to launch operator Lion Air Group imminent, Tru is in advanced sales discussions with several other potential airline customers, Karam says.

Tru was formed in 2014 after Textron merged subsidiary AAI Corp with three new acquisitions — Mechtronix, Opinicus and ProFlight. It quickly won Boeing’s order to develop the full flight simulator for the company’s pilot training centres for the 737 Max. The order built upon a previous sale by Mechtronix of a full flight simulator for the 737NG family for Boeing’s flight training system. The delivery of the first 737 Max full flight simulator arrived in early 2017 as scheduled at the time of contract award.

“Usually development programmes can be challenging especially when it’s a simulator programme happening in parallel with aircraft program,” Karam says in an interview. “But I’m happy to say we indeed did deliver the units on time.”
