Vietnam Airlines has started a service between Hanoi and Myanmar's commercial capital Yangon, and plans to start flights to Shanghai later this month.

It launched flights to Yangon yesterday, and will operate the service four times a week using Fokker 70s, says a carrier spokesman.

From 29 March, Vietnam Airlines will start flights to Shanghai, says the carrier.

The Vietnamese national carrier will operate thrice weekly between Hanoi and Shanghai, and four times a week between Ho Chi Minh City and Shanghai, it says, adding that it will use Airbus A321s.

The carrier will be the only airline operating on the Hanoi-Yangon route, shows Innovata.

However, it will compete against Shanghai Airlines on the two Shanghai routes.

Vietnam Airlines expects to receive up to 14 aircraft this year, says its spokesman.

This will include Airbus A330s, A321s and ATR 72s, he adds.
