Yemeni flag-carrier Yemenia has been blocked from operating services to the UK pending an improvement in security procedures.

The UK prime minister, Gordon Brown, told Parliament today that authorities in the two countries had agreed that the carrier should "suspend direct flights with immediate effect".

Concern over the security situation in Yemen has increased since the failed attack on a US-bound Delta Air Lines aircraft last month.

Brown says that aviation security specialists are in Yemen to review procedures. He says that he hopes Yemenia flights can be "resumed soon" but insists that the safety of citizens should be a priority.

Yemenia normally operates Airbus A330s on the Sana'a-London Heathrow route.
