Zurich operator picked to develop new Delhi-region airport

Indian authorities have selected the operator of Zurich airport to develop and operate a new airport at Jewar.

The new greenfield airport will be developed under a 40-year concession, says Flughafen Zurich.

It will be located 80km south of the capital, Delhi, and is intended to absorb increasing air traffic demand for the region.

Flughafen Zurich puts the capital investment for the initial phase at SwF650 million ($650 million), a construction period scheduled to take four years.

This will provide sufficient capacity to handle 12 million annual passengers.

Flughafen Zurich says it will operate the airport and pay a fixed passenger fee to Indian government authorities starting six years after the airport is commissioned.

The company had previously had a presence in India with a financial interest in Bangalore's Kempegowda airport.

Flughafen Zurich sold its remaining shareholding in the facility two years ago.
