US DISPLAY manufacturer Planar Advance has received its first contract for a colour display using field-sequential device (FSD) technology. The contract is for a 75mm monitor to be incorporated into a gunnery and missile simulator being developed by Thomson Training and Simulation France and Alcatel STR Switzerland for the Swiss defence ministry.
Beaverton, Oregon-based Planar is a supplier of cathode-ray-tube (CRT) and flat-panel electroluminescent displays for the McDonnell Douglas C-17 and F-18 and Northrop Grumman B-2. The company's FSD technology combines a monochrome CRT with its ColorGard electronically switchable liquid-crystal colour filter to produce a high-resolution, high-brightness, full-colour display.
Planar says that the technology offers higher resolution and brightness than a conventional shadow-mask colour CRT or flat-panel liquid-crystal displays.
