Lift off: Record-breaking pilot Polly Vacher, honoured with an MBE in the Queen's birthday honours list in recognition of her services to charity, had an unusual take-off at the show yesterday. At sponsor Shell Aviation's stand she found a helping hand – or eight – as (from left) Steve Dudley, John Barrett, Greg Romagnoli, and David Dowse lent their support.
Polly's epic 124-day journey, officially "the smallest aircraft flown solo by a woman to circumnavigate the world via Australia and the Pacific", raised £183,000 for Royal International Air Tattoo Flying Scholarships for the Disabled.
Details of another Shell-sponsored flight by Vacher to raise money for the charity are expected by year-end.
