GE Aircraft Engines' continuing success last year in developing and marketing the GE90 (above) won the US company the Propulsion award. The giant powerplant took almost 75% of all engine orders for the Boeing 777 during the year. The GE90-115B was launched to power longer-range 777s and the -94B was certificated for and entered service on the 777-200ER. The GE90 story is one that has been 10 years in the making, with the year 2000 marking the final breakthrough. The finalists were MTU Aero Engines and Orenda Recip. MTU's EJ200 fan successfully demonstrated its ability to resist damage from ice, hail and birdstrikes during the final qualification tests of the Eurofighter engine last year.
Orenda Recip the first aircraft powered by its OE600A advanced piston engine enter service. The Orenda OE600A-powered de Havilland Canada DHC-3 Otter received Transport Canada type certification in January. By the end of the year Air Wilga's first OE600A-pwered aircraft had completed 650hr of commercial service.
