US-based Advanced Training Systems International (ATSI) is reported to be negotiating a purchase of the Royal New Zealand Air Force's (RNZAF) McDonnell Douglas A4K Skyhawk fleet. ATSI is understood to be negotiating a six-aircraft training package with the Royal Australian Navy that would enable a resumption of surface ship self-defence training based on A4Ks performing simulated airstrikes. The RNZAF had provided maritime training for Australia for almost 10 years under a bilateral arrangement terminated in December 2001 when the A4Ks were withdrawn from active service.
