ROCKWELL International has completed the purchase of state-owned AeroSpace Technologies of Australia (ASTA), in a deal which values the aerostructures and defence business at A$40 million ($29 million).
Rockwell has drawn up a business plan which outlines the transfer of A$130 million in additional aerostructures work to ASTA over the next seven to ten years. The US company has already committed to transfer a A$50 million contract to ASTA over the next year.
The US company says that it intends to improve ASTA's manufacturing capabilities and establish the company, which has plants in Melbourne and Avalon, as a "centre of excellence" for precision stretch-forming and production of wing control-surface skins. ASTA already manufactures composite components for Boeing, including the 777 rudder.
"By merging Rockwell's and ASTA's extensive commercial-aerostructures and military-aircraft modification experience, we build critical mass that opens up opportunities which we couldn't pursue individually," says John McLuckey, Rockwell Defense Systems president. ASTA's sales could double to A$160 million in the next five years, he says.
