Bordeaux airport expects about a million passengers to pass through its low-cost terminal in 2011, its first full year in operation.

The French airport opened the low-cost terminal, dubbed "Billi", in May last year and Bordeaux airport's development director Jean-Luc Poiroux explained it has been driving most of the growth at the airport.

A million passengers this year would already account for more than half the 1.8 million passenger capacity of the terminal and Poiroux said he envisages passenger numbers to increase further in 2012.

He said the new terminal has enjoyed so much initial success that "we are already thinking about adopting new facilities and adapting it since the low-cost sector is growing so fast".

With a new runway in place, Bordeaux airport is equipped to handle any size of aircraft, "even Airbus A380s without any problems" said Poiroux, who added that the airport already receives Boeing 777s from French airline Air Austral.
