The Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force continues to buy one US-1A SAR amphibian every two years. Designed for long-range anti-submarine warfare, the four-turboprop PS-1 flying boat was first flown in October 1967 and was followed by the US-1 amphibious variant in October 1974.
