Singapore Airlines (SIA) is offering $400,000 to families of the more than 80 people who died in the 31 October crash of a Boeing 747-400s at Taipei after admitting "full responsibility" for the accident.
The crash occurred as a typhoon was approaching Taiwan, and as the aircraft attempted to depart Chiang Kai Shek International Airport for Los Angeles.
The aircraft's captain reported striking an object during the take-off roll. Days after the crash it was revealed that the accident occurred after the captain attempted to take off from a runway that had been closed and which had construction equipment on it. He had been cleared for a departure on a directly parallel runway.
SIA chief executive Cheong Choong Kong said the airline would carry out its own investigation to determine how the accident occurred.
