The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) is to shorten the main runway at the city-state's secondary Seletar Airport for safety reasons. The move is likely to affect operators of larger business jets, which may have to relocate their VIP operations to Singapore's Changi International Airport.

CAAS says it plans to introduce a runway end safety area (RESA) at both ends of Seletar's runway to meet International Civil Aviation Organisation requirements. "The RESA reduces the risk of damage to an aircraft undershooting or overshooting the runway," says CAAS. "Land constraints at Seletar Airport mean there is a need to shorten the runway by around 90m [300ft] to accommodate the RESAs."

The runway will be cut to about 1,540m, restricting operations for some large business jets. Industry sources say this will up safety margins as aircraft pass tall structures off the runway's north end.
