Northrop Grumman has won a $1.6 million, 15-month contract to design, test and manufacture smart focal-plane electronics for the US Army's Space and Strategic Defence Command. Smart focal planes are infrared sensors capable of putting signal-processing functions in ultra-compact structures directly on the focal plane. Current signal-processing practices involve large remote electronics packages. A near-term application of the technology is the Theater High Altitude Area Defence system.
