Aviation Industries of China (AVIC) says that talks are proceeding well with Aero International (Regional) AI(R) over the possible setting up of licensed production of the AI(R) ATR 42 and ATR 72 regional turboprops in China.

AVIC vice-minister and executive vice-president, Wang Ang, says that the talks are aimed at establishing production of the two aircraft to operate throughout China in combination with Harbin Y-12s and Y-7As.

AVIC's decision to opt for licensed manufacturing of an existing Western aircraft is partly based on its experiences in developing the Y-12/Y-7A. "We are not planning to put any more investment into developing any totally new products. If the CAAC thinks Chinese customers need a new regional aircraft, then we are willing to develop co-operative agreements with any manufacturer of such aircraft. The ATR 42 and 72 talks are happening because of the requirements of Chinese airlines, and because these aircraft suit those requirements."
