Andres Conesa joined Cintra's board in 2003 as a representative of the Mexican government. That same year he became deputy under-secretary for public credit. The government had an interest in Cintra because it had acquired a majority of its shares during a series of bank rescues and was required to resell them when it could. At Cintra, Conesa first served on board committees involving finance and compensation, but became increasingly involved in Cintra's planned sale. When he took over as Cintra's president last December, he resigned his government post. Before joining Cintra, Conesa had held a number of posts in public finance. Educated in Mexico City as an economist, Conesa earned a PhD in economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He obtained Fulbright and Ford MacArthur scholarships, and in 1997 won the Banamex national prize in research economics. Conesa is married with a son and two daughters. He enjoys astronomy and golf, but says his main interest is his family.
