IATA is helping to establish an airport committee to represent airline’s interests in the construction of Poland’s planned Solidarity airport.

Airport developer, Solidarity Transport Hub Poland, says the consultative committee will serve as an airline technical body to "review strategic options, assess the cost and benefits, and consider the operational impacts" on airlines and passengers associated with the building of the new facility, which is expected to be completed by 2027.

IATA is to invite all passenger and cargo airlines that have an interest in operating to the new gateway to join the committee. This will include both current operators at Warsaw's Chopin airport, which is set to close, and those that may have future plans to enter the Polish market when Solidarity airport opens.

Participants will be expected to have the "seniority or expertise" to represent their organisation’s views and make a contribution to the proceedings.

"Our operation is carefully thought out," says Mikolaj Wild, government plenipotentiary for Solidarity Transport Hub Poland, adding: "It is impossible to plan the airport well without asking for the opinion of those who will use it.

Solidarity airport is planned as a transfer hub between Warsaw and Lodz, integrating air, rail and road transport. The state planned airport is to open in stages, with the facility able to handle 45 million passengers annually in the first stage.

The first meeting of the committee is due to take place in Warsaw on 18 July, and the developer says the agenda of the meeting includes verifying that the conceptual assumptions made by the airport company are aligned with the needs of carriers and whether any possible improvements need to be made.

Solidarity Transport Hub Poland intends to a publish a master plan for the new facility which will include its planned location, air traffic forecasts, dimensions of planned infrastructure and a detailed business model, later this year.
