British Airways will land in Charleston, South Carolina, in 2019, offering the city's first scheduled nonstop transatlantic service.

The Oneworld Alliance carrier will offer twice-weekly service between Charleston and London Heathrow with a 214-seat Boeing 787-8 from 4 April to 24 October, the Charleston airport says.

BA is in the midst of an expansion to North America. It has added service to Fort Lauderdale, Nashville, New Orleans and San Jose since 2017, and will begin flights to Pittsburgh next April, FlightGlobal schedules data shows.

The London-based carrier will grow its US capacity by 4.5% this year, according to the data.

American Airlines, a member of BA's immunised joint venture across the Atlantic, is the second largest carrier in Charleston with a 23% share of seats in 2018, schedules show. Delta Air Lines is the largest airline at the airport.

Iberia and Finnair are also members of American and BA's joint venture.

The London route by BA marks the return of scheduled international service to Charleston, which last saw seasonal flights by Porter Airlines to Toronto City Billy Bishop in 2015, schedules show.
