Lockheed Martin has teamed with Alenia Aeronautica to propose that Canada replaces its 32C-130E/H Hercules transports and Buffalo search and rescue (SAR) aircraft at the same time to save money. The two are offering to swap the older Hercules for newer C-130Js and C-27Js, which would replace the Buffalos. The Canadian military wants up to 15 new SAR aircraft.

Canadian defence minister John McCallum says replacing the Buffalos is a priority because of their age and new aircraft would relieve the Hercules. He adds that there are no plans to replace the Hercules before the end of the decade.

EADS is also pushing hard for the SAR contract, offering its Spanish-built C295. The Department of National Defence expects to issue a request for proposals next year.
