So what does the ideal airline alliance executive look like? What are the key elements essential to this person's success? The executives interviewed in the Spencer Stuart study conclude that the successful candidate must display the following qualities:

A strategic viewpoint, understanding where value can be created through synergies among the carriers, as well as what their own airline can leverage; A cultural awareness and international experience with comfort and familiarity in working across borders and cultures; Executive breadth spanning a range of functional areas with a specific emphasis on marketing and sales, network management and, to a lesser extent, information technology; An understanding of how to "roll-out" new concepts in different organisational contexts, adapting approaches as appropriate; Well-developed team building, influencing and consensus-building skills and the ability to advance initiatives through others without using force or a directive leadership style; A creative streak, characterised by ideas and innovation, and the related capability to stimulate others to do likewise.
