The German Ministry of Defense has awarded a $4 million development contract to Litton's LITEF division in Freiburg, Germany, to upgrade German air force Tornados with the LN-100G-based laser gyro GPINS (global-positioning inertial-navigation system). Laboratory integration work will begin in mid-1997, with flight tests due in 1998, and full-scale production beginning in 1999. Total programme value could exceed $50 million, says Litton, if the UK and Italian air forces also select the GPINS over equipment from GEC-Ferranti and Honeywell.
