The UAE is likely to announce today that it is to sign an agreement with South Africa covering a range of military activities.

South African defence minister Mosiua Lekota is expected to be at Dubai 2000 today. The agreement will probably be signed this week with the head of the UAE armed forces, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The two countries are believed to have been negotiating the deal for the past 36 months. The agreement is likely to cover purchase of defence equipment as well as joint training and personnel service programmes.
