Promotion drive at United

In a move partly designed to protect its most valued senior managers from being head-hunted, troubled United Airlines has made several promotions, three filling open executive positions.

The most prominent sees Jake Brace, senior vice- president finance and chief financial officer (CFO),becoming executive vice-president while retaining his old role. Brace continues his rise at United: he was only made CFO in autumn 2001.

Bob Merz, managing director-corporate planning, moves to vice-president financial planning and analysis, with Jeff Kawalsky, assistant treasurer, becoming vice-president and treasurer. Both will report to Brace.

Mark Anderson, senior director-governmental affairs, will become vice-president-governmental affairs in Washington, overseeing local, state and federal affairs nationwide.
