US Airways will hire more than 350 new pilots over the next 12-16 months to replace retiring mainline pilots.

Additionally, the airline said in a statement released on September 12 it plans to move 140 US Airways Express pilots who were furloughed from mainline aircraft several years ago back to those mainline positions.

"New-hire pilots will move onto the airline’s growing Embraer 190 fleet, which in turn will drive current pilots to other aircraft like the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 family," the statement says.

"It was only two short years ago that both the former US Airways’ and America West’s futures were in the air," says US Airways president Scott Kirby in the statement. "To stand strong two years later and announce not only will we no longer have any pilots on furlough, but also will begin hiring new pilots is simply great news for our employees and our airline."

The company plans to begin training the first of the new pilots in November and has set up a web site to accept applications online.
