The US General Accounting Office (GAO) says that the Pentagon operates too many fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters for VIP travel.
The Congressional watchdog recommends, cutting back the 600 operational support airlift fleet.
The GAO has estimated that the aircraft, which constitute about 6% of the Pentagon's total fixed-wing aircraft inventory, cost the taxpayer about $380 million annually to operate and maintain.
It says that senior-level defence officials and US military leaders should instead fly on commercial airlines. Only officials with jobs that require continuous secure communications should continue using militarised business aircraft.
