Wizz Air will launch flights from Budapest to Baku in Azerbaijan on 17 June, continuing its expansion outside of Europe.

The Hungarian low-cost carrier will initially operate the overnight service twice weekly.

Its Baku launch comes ahead of the introduction of flights to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates in October. Wizz Air also flies to Kutaisi in Georgia and Tel Aviv in Israel, as well as operating subsidiary Wizz Air Ukraine in Kiev.

"Wizz Air pursues 'Go East' to stimulate low-cost flying in one of the most dynamically growing regions in the world," comments chief executive József Váradi.

"The expansion of our Budapest network with Tel Aviv, Kiev and Dubai reflects on Hungary's appeal to the ever growing potential of incoming tourism from eastern markets. Now the opening of the Budapest-Baku route follows suit."

It emerged this week that Wizz Air is poised to hold talks with Russian authorities over the possible launch of a Moscow-based subsidiary in 2014.
