The European Joint Aviation Authorities (JAA) has approved the use of global-positioning-system satellite-navigation equipment for general-aviation aircraft which cannot be fitted with flight-management systems to achieve the required navigational-performance standard known as the RNP-5. This requires guaranteed navigational accuracy of within 9km (5nm) for 95% of the time. The move is expected to open European Civil Aviation Conference instrument -flight-rules (IFR) airspace to thousands of IFR-equipped aircraft which would otherwise be banned.
