GREATEST MILITARY AIRCRAFT
WINNER SUPERMARINE SPITFIRE
Back in 1940 he was one of the few: 68 years later, Spitfire pilot Wg Cdr Peter Ayerst was at our 100 Greatest party representing all those who flew the iconic fighter, credited - along with the Hawker Hurricane - with beating back the Luftwaffe and preventing the Nazi invasion of Britain. Alongside him to pick up the award for the Greatest Military Aircraft was John Turner, chief test pilot with BAE Systems, successor company to Supermarine.
