Da Nang International Airport has opened its new international terminal, with Vietnam Airlines to commence operations there.

Vietnam Airlines will use the new terminal for all arriving and departing international flights from Tuesday 9 May, says the SkyTeam carrier in a statement.

The carrier has set up 22 international check-in counters to the new terminal, designated Terminal 2, and has room for expansion.

At the World Routes event at Chengdu in September 2016, Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) representatives told FlightGlobal that the new terminal will cater to existing international carriers and support growth. Key markets the ACV is targeting for more flights to Da Nang are Japan, China, and Russia. Previously, the ACV has said the terminal will open in the second quarter.

They add that carriers have desired more international capacity, but that the airport’s small international terminal – basically a walled-off extension of the domestic terminal - has limited growth potential.

The new terminal, plus additional work on the airport’s apron, will boost total capacity to 13 million passengers by 2020. It is located next to Da Nang's existing terminal.
