The European Joint Aviation Authorities has recommended that its 27 member nations certify MD Helicopters' MD Explorer for Category A single pilot, instrument flight rule (IFR) operations. The recommendation follows the JAA's recent validation of the eight-seat, twin-engined helicopter. MD Helicopters was awarded single pilot IFR approval from the US Federal Aviation Administration earlier this year.

Single-pilot IFR certification allows qualified pilots to fly helicopters in conditions where visibility is limited, particularly where there is no visible horizon or ground reference. "Category A-rated helicopters can safely continue flight during a landing or take-off on a single engine, if necessary. This rating will make the Explorer fully compliant with JAR OPS 3 Class 1 operations, [due for implementation in 2001]," says MD Helicopters.
