RU-38 TWIN CONDOR
Development of a twin-engined conversion of the Schweizer RG-8A Condor surveillance aircraft continues. One aircraft, with pusher and tractor Teledyne Continental GIO-550 piston engines and twin booms, has been flown. The US Coast Guard plans to convert two RG-8s to RU-38As.
The RU-38A is designed for covert, low-level day/night patrol missions. The programme had effectively been in limbo following the loss of a US Coast Guard R-G-8A in 1996, from which the RU-38A is derived. Flight testing of the RU-38A resumed in the second quarter of 1997.
