Air Transat says it will offer direct flights from Montreal to Copenhagen next year during the airline’s summer season, further expanding its international network to 27 European destinations.

The flights will operate twice a week from 16 June thorough 20 September 2020 on an A321LR, the Montreal-based airline says on 1 October. With this new link, Air Transat will be the only air carrier offering non-stop service between the two cities.

Air Transat is a business unit of Transat A.T., a leading Canadian tourism operator, which is in the process of being acquired by Air Canada.

Last month Transat chief executive Jean-Marc Eustache told analysts the transaction is on track to close by the second quarter 2020 given all regulatory approvals and closing conditions.

In August, a 95% majority of Transat’s voting shareholders approved the agreement for Air Canada to buy the company for C$18 per share, which would make the cash transaction worth C$720 million.

Air Transat, which specialises in vacation packages, would continue to operate flights under its own brand after the Air Canada deal closes. Transat offers vacation packages, hotel stays and air travel to 60 destinations in the Americas and Europe. This reach could give Air Canada a chance to counter tourism packages from competitors including Canada’s second-largest carrier WestJet.

Earlier this year, Air Transat took delivery of the first two of 15 Airbus A321LRs as part of its fleet renewal programme to replace older aircraft including six A310s. It expects to have up to six of these new aircraft next summer.

Air Transat adds that it will announce full details of its summer 2020 program “shortly”.
