Kenya is to acquire five remanufactured Bell Helicopter Huey II rotorcraft in a deal worth $52.2 million.

Awarded on 26 September, the contract also includes spare parts, training and programme management.

Bell will re-use existing fuselages for the contract, adding new main and tail rotors and tail booms as well as “modified” gearboxes and engines.

Deliveries are scheduled to run until 29 December 2017, according to a contract notification from the US Department of Defense.

The deal was provisionally outlined in a March single-source contract solicitation.

Bell says it has another 15 remanufactured Huey IIs covered by “active negotiations”.

Nairobi's active fleet of transport helicopters includes Mil Mi-171s and Airbus Helicopters AS330s.
