Nearly 4,000 Asia-Pacific flights cancelled Sunday as typhoon hit

The impact of Typhoon Mangkhut on air connectivity in the Asia-Pacific region is highlighted in data from FlightGlobal, incorporating FlightStats, which shows nearly 4,000 services were cancelled on 16 September.

FlightGlobal recorded 5,050 cancelled flights across the world; some 3,934 of these were in Asia-Pacific as the storm hit southern China.

Data shows Guangzhou Baiyun International, Shenzhen Baoan International and Hong Kong International airports experienced around 800 cancellations each, based on combined figures for departures and arrivals, as they were forced into closures by the weather conditions.

In terms of airlines, China Southern suffered the most cancellations on Sunday, at more than 750 flights. Other carriers towards the top of the list included Shenzhen Airlines with nearly 400 cancellations and Hainan Airlines with close to 300.

China Eastern Airlines, Air China, Cathay Pacific and Hong Kong Airlines also recorded hundreds of cancellations between them, with many others experiencing significant disruption to services.

Data for Monday suggested operations were beginning to improve, but disruption was still expected, with hundreds of flights cancelled.

Global cancellations have spiked in recent days, FlightGlobal data shows. On top of Typhoon Mangkhut, there has been significant disruption caused by Hurricane Florence in North Carolina.

Charlotte Douglas International airport saw around 450 flights cancelled on Sunday as it was forced into closure by the storm. On the same day, regional operator PSA Airlines experienced more than 250 cancellations and American Airlines more than 100.

Hundreds of members of the network-planning community are in Guangzhou this week for the annual World Routes event.
