Japan Air Commuter, the regional operation of Japan Airlines, has signed for eight firm ATR 42-600s, marking the 1,500th order for the turboprop and its first sale to the Asian country.

The deal also includes 14 purchase rights and one option, which are convertible to the larger ATR 72-600.

Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2017 and run until 2019.

The carrier's chief executive Arata Yasujima describes it as the "perfect aircraft for Japan's regional routes".
