Virgin Atlantic is to begin codesharing with WestJet on points to and within Canada.

The co-operation, which begins on 19 November, sees the UK carrier codeshare with the Canadian partner of its shareholder Delta Air Lines.

Delta, which holds a 49% stake in Virgin, in the summer secured Canadian competition approval for its planned transborder joint venture with WestJet.

Under the agreement Virgin, which Cirium schedules data shows does not operate to Canada, will add its code to four WestJet services to London Gatwick. WestJet flies year-round from Calgary and Toronto to Gatwick, as well as operating seasonal services from Halifax and Vancouver to the UK airport.

Virgin will also codeshare on 28 further onward domestic destinations in Canada with the new partnership.
