The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating reports that a Delta Air Lines Boeing 757-200 suffered an uncontained engine failure as it departed Atlanta on 5 September.

Following the engine failure, the pilots shut down the engine and returned to Atlanta, landing safely and without passenger injuries, the NTSB says on 6 September.

Pratt & Whitney PW2037 turbofans power the aircraft involved in the incident, a 757-200 with registration N668DN, according to Flight Fleets Analyzer and FlightStats.

The aircraft was operating Delta flight 1418, a 22:30 local time departure from Atlanta to Orlando, FlightStats shows.

Neither Delta nor the NTSB responded to requests for more information.
