Inflight entertainment (IFE) provider Thales has won a contract to equip 22 of American Airlines' incoming Boeing 787-8s with the Avant seat-back IFE system.

The aircraft will have 10in (254mm) seat-back screens in the coach cabin, 12in screens at premium economy seats and 17in screens in business class, Thales says.

American is scheduled to receive the first of those aircraft in 2020, with deliveries running into 2021, according to Thales and to FlightGlobal's Fleets Analyzer database. The airline's current in-service 787s have IFE systems made by Panasonic Avionics, Fleets Analyzer shows.

Thales disclosed the deal at the Airline Passenger Experience Association's annual expo in Boston on 25 September.

The agreement builds on an earlier agreement under which Thales installed the Avant IFE system on 213 of American's 737s and Airbus A320-family aircraft.
