Thailand is considering upgrading its Lockheed Martin C-130 transport aircraft and Bell UH-1H Huey utility helicopter fleets, with Thai Aviation Industries (TAI) expected to receive an army contract this year to conduct a structural upgrade to up to 40 UH-1Hs. The air force is also considering contracting the company to add a night-vision capability to up to 19 of its Hueys, which are already receiving improved navigation and communications equipment under an Israel Aircraft Industries-led project that will conclude this year.
Established by the Thai government in late 2003 using air force maintenance resources, TAI has until now serviced only fixed-wing aircraft, but will acquire a military helicopter hangar in April. The company, which in 2004 overhauled three C-130s and one BAe 748, will this year overhaul the air force's Alenia G222 transports and Pilatus PC-9 trainers. TAI also hopes to lead an avionics upgrade to its 12-strong C-130 fleet from next year, with several avionics suppliers bidding to partner the company.
