Trans World Airlines (TWA) has firmed up its plans for additional Boeing MD-83s with the signing of a $1.1 billion order for 24 aircraft.

It emerged earlier this month that the carrier was discussing an order with Boeing for 24 MD-83s, which would see production of the former McDonnell Douglas twinjet extended until late 1999 or 2000 .

Deliveries will be made between May and December 1999. TWA already has outstanding orders for eight MD-83s from an earlier order due for delivery at the turn of the year. The new deal will boost its MD-80 fleet to 103.
