US carrier World Airways will once again become a Boeing 747 operator when it takes delivery of two -400 freighters under long-term leases with subsidiaries of US lessor Aircastle.
“World Airways was the first customer for the Boeing 747C convertible cargo/passenger aircraft in 1973, and World eventually operated or leased a total of four passenger and cargo 747s,” says World chief marketing officer Rob Binns in a statement.
“Those 747-100s left the World Airways fleet by 1983. Today we welcome the return of the 747 to meet the growing global cargo demands of this decade and beyond.”
Delivery of 747-400s is expected to occur in March and October of 2008. Financial terms of the agreement have not been disclosed.
A subsidiary of Global Aero Logistics, World’s current fleet comprises six Boeing MD-11Fs and two McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30 freighters.
