AgustaWestland has joined forces with fashion design house Karl Lagerfeld to design VIP helicopter interiors and exteriors.

The cooperation will initially focus on "limited edition" designs for the AW139 medium-twin helicopter, but "there is a possibility to expand the partnership to include other AgustaWestland commercial helicopter models," the Italian airframer says.

This is not the first time AgustaWestland has enlisted the expertise of fashion houses to boost the appeal of its civil helicopters to the VIP market.

The Casoria, Costa-based company employed Italian fashion house Versace in 2008 to design interiors for its AW109 Power, Grand and AW139. In the mid 1980's it worked with fellow Italian design company Trussardi to provide a high-end interior for an early incarnation of the Power - dubbed the A109.

"Through this cooperation AgustaWestland introduces a new limited edition customised solution, and is proud to offer Karl Lagerfeld's creativity and sophisticated style to its growing customer base,' the airframer says. "The fashion house will be entering the helicopter exterior/interior design sector for the first time, and is excited to collaborate with AgustaWestland on the most successful helicopter in its category worldwide."
