As demonstrated by Flight Daily News's specially re-created picture, there was no clear answer to the age-old question - which is the faster? - when yesterday's flying display was opened by a joint dash up Farnborough's main display runway by a British Aerospace Hawk 200 and McLaren's unique MP4-98 two-seater Formula One racing car.
Needless to say, they are both 'winners' in their own environment and a genuine race would be almost impossible to stage - although the thought remains appealing.
Driven by McLaren's Darren Turner, the 3 litre Mercedes V10-powered car rocketed up the runway as the Hawk (resplendent in McLaren-Mercedes livery) flew low overhead. In the back seat of the McLaren was Eurofighter test pilot Chris Worning.
